Commissioned Art

Commissioned art are pieces of art you have asked to be done in a specific way and what artists have been doing forever. After all Michelangelo was commissioned by the Pope to paint the Sistine Chapel. Okay so that is way grander than anything I have ever done and I am pretty sure better money but I am pretty sure I feel the same way as all others artists, we want to best for the art and for the client. We can work together either in person and I will take the photos for you or if you already have the photo then you can just send it to me via email.
Commissions for portraits and erotic art are priced the same. After all a shadow is a shadow, a shape is a shape, what the subject is doesn’t matter in the production of the piece. You might see a pose you like and imagine yourself in there. A special anniversary of your grandparents is coming and a special gift of a portrait of them when they first met. A commission is only limited by your imagination and my abilities.
Speaking of my abilities, there have been times when I have turned down commissions. Usually because I don’t think I give the desired effect. I have had people ask me to draw an entire arena with crowd watching an event, and they wanted it done a very small size, there was just no way for me to do that. I will always be honest with you. Just tell me what you want and let’s see if we can make it happen. After all the worst I can say is no, so never any harm in asking.
The other issue people seem to have is their expectations.
I get asked a lot for very small drawings but as my art teacher used to tell us, if you draw it small you loose the detail. If I were to draw a full body shot of a person on an 8 X 10 paper, while it would look like them it would never have all the fine details that make them who they are. Most of my originals are usually done at a 13” X16” size but for those that are showing 2 people full body shots, they are usually about 22” x 28”.

One other things that seems come up is realistic cost ideas. Commissions have run everything from $125 to $650 depending on what they wanted, media and size. I can’t give a run down of that price until you tell me what you want. I will base my price on the amount of time I believe it will take me to do the piece. Half the commission cost is due before I will start the work The other part is due before I will ship the finished art work to you. Please understand that I am never trying to gut you for costs by the time the hours is worked out that it takes to do a drawing, I actually usually only make between $6 and $10 an hour. Do you work that cheaply? I could charge you a great deal more and have been told I should but when I set out I always wanted to leave art accessible to everyone. I am offended when a gallery prices a little tiny painting at $1500 by some unknown artist who’s work isn’t that good. I don’t want to ever do that to people who I do art for. If when you ask for the price quote if it turns out to be more than you can afford just say so and perhaps we can work out a payment plan or decide not to forward but please don’t insult me by saying that it is too much. I work hard and should be respected for giving a more than kind and fair pricing for more work.
Get in touch with me, let’s see if we can’t make your vision come true.
